Game Review
Good conditions for football, the wind slightly favouring the grandstand end with the Blues kicking to the Lygon Street end in the first quarter. In a game notable for the retirement of two early Carlton greats in George Bruce and Jim Marchbank, as well as two other good contributors in Andy McDonald and Jack Baquie, Carlton waved goodbye to the finals after losing to Geelong by 23 points on our home turf. With one game to go in the home and away rounds, the Blues were six points behind fourth-placed St Kilda, and it was time to start planning for next year.
Alf Williamson
"During the second quarter of the game between Carlton and Geelong, Williamson, the Carlton follower, came down in crowd. He played on till the interval. He was then examined by Dr. Strahan, and it was found that he had broken his left collarbone. Carlton, therefore played a man short during the second half." (Bendigo Advertiser August 25)19th Man?
" Without detracting from the merits of Geelong's victory, which was gained by an exhibition of brilliance such as Geelong usually forget to pack in their trunks when travelling from the Pivot, it was distinctly unfortunate for Carlton, and the question looms large as to an alteration in the rules whereby the side possessing the player injured in a game should not be penalised by his absence." (Punch August 28 p43)At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 103.2.
