Game Review

An incredible game that has been reviewed to some extent in the season review. However, what should also be noted is that not only did Carlton kick 1.14, but that the only goal was kicked on the siren by Wayne Johnston (who was more accurate on the run!!) from a mark/free kick on the boundary line!!!

Some of the more memorable misses were from Alan Mangels running into an open goal and most incredibly, by Wow Jones from a mark in the goal square!!!

At the other end, Michael 'Gladys' Moncrieff and John 'Bomber' Hendrie relieved past glories for themselves by kicking the goals that the Carlton players could not manage.

The final term was a nightmare for Carlton forwards with the Blues kicking 14 straight behinds!!!!!! Carlton scored its only goal for the quarter after the final siren and lowered its colours to Hawthorn by two points - the same margin which separated the sides at three quarter time. - Football Record.

Last Quarter Blues

"The blame was well spread. Centre half forward Bruce Doull started the debacle with the first kick of the quarter, then followed rover Ken Sheldon, Alan Mangles, wingman Peter Francis (twice in a minute with no defender in sight), a rushed behind, Wayne Johnston, Jim Buckley, (Alan) Mangels, (Ken) Sheldon, Warren Jones, Phil Maylin, (Ken) Sheldon and finally (Jim) Buckley." (The Age May 12)

This writer was at this match, and remembers the Blues' dominance in the second half. After a terrific third quarter revival the Blues just couldn't put the ball between the goals and the few times Hawthorn went forward, of course, they goaled. To rub the salt into the wounds Wayne Johnston from a very difficult angle from the boundary line at the northern outer end, goaled after the siren to lose by 2 points..
