Game Review

''The Blues are struggling
That was one game we didn't need to lose. Suddenly there is pressure being applied by other teams to snatch the double chance. You may think that I am over-reacting, but there are many footballers out of form at Carlton at the moment, that the possibility of us losing more games is not out of the question. Jon Dorotich is playing as negatively as I can remember. Sure and strong at his best, Dorotich has struggled badly in recent weeks and must turn the corner quickly. So much of the backline's stability depends on him. Fraser Murphy hasn't managed to take firm grasp of the opportunities the club has given him. It was a tragedy that he missed the Grand Final last year, I would hate to see him left out of the side for any big game, but Fraser has to improve his all round game. It's no good burning here and there - he must learn to put in consistently. Molly Meldrum found it tough lately. He seemed to turn the corner against Collingwood, and was servicable against the Eagles, but he is the best running player in the league and should be giving us a lot more. Up forward, too much of the workload is Kernahan's. Silvagni or Sartori would be beautiful as a foil, but they are not ready yet. It is up to the Ogiers, McKenzies to fill the gaps and hold their spots, but they always seem to struggle at top level. Mark Naley has finally settled in. His roving is improving each week, despite the fact that I don't think he is a true rover. He is receiving soild support from Adrian Gleeson, but overall our running players are down on form. The Eagles killed us on the ground, and it makes me shudder to think what the Kangas or Hawks would do. The wheels haven't fallen off yet, though. Don't get me wrong. Kernahan is providing tremendous leadership, Tom Alvin continues to shine and Justin Madden is playing consistent football. The nucleus is tight, the teamwork is a little stale. - Carl Toner Inside Football.''

''Eagles rock Blues
When Carlton returned from Perth at the weekend, they were four points in arrears, a certain team member was $5000 down and the team's fallibility was plainly evident. Theoretically, Carlton should have won the game against the West Coast Eagles by a wide margin. But theories do not appear to count for much this season. They have been proven to be unreliable as David Rhys-Jones's promises to tread the straight and narrow. After losing to Hawthorn and struggling against Collingwood, the Blues have some work to do if they are to keep their appointment with Hawthorn in September. In a very tight game, the Eagles had a number of players keeping the statistician busy. John Annear had 26 possessions (18 & 8), Chris Lewis had 27 (17 & 10) and Chris Mainwaring finished with 21 kicks, eight marks and five handballs. For the Blues, David Glascott had 23 disposals (14 & 9) and Richard Dennis had 21 (13 & 8). Justin Madden's 6 kicks and 22 hit-outs should convince the lanky ruckman he may be better off playing the game on his hands and contesting the ruck duels with his feet. - Footy Week.''
