Game Review

Due to the vagaries of the Sectional system, Carlton climbed to sixth place on the ladder after this shock win over Melbourne in the last game of the season. Playing the cohesive football that been glimpsed far too rarely throughout a troubled year, the Blues kept Melbourne almost scoreless for three quarters, and put victory beyond doubt with a four unanswered goals in the third term.

"The Redlegs were fairly out of the hunt with Carlton, who ran rings round them with general excellence. 'Dido' alias Considine, merits first place of the day, fast off the mark, quick as a terrier at ground play, and clever in the extreme in running and handballing. Of the rest Walsh, H. Thompson, Monagle, McShane, Stuckey, Williams and McNamara deserve special mention." (Melbourne Punch September 14 p24)

Therefore, the 1899 season ended with:
- Carlton's first victory in the "sectional" play-offs;
- The Blues first win over Melbourne; and
- our first victory over anyone other than St Kilda or South Melbourne.

Happily, the new century would soon produce much better results than had been attained thus far.
