Game Review

The Blues recovered from a pasting by Essendon the previous week, to crush Melbourne by 5 goals at Princes Park, on the day when extrovert Tasmanian ruckman "Percy" Jones began his celebrated career. On the back of a huge opening quarter, Carlton dominated the Demons throughout and cruised home for a welcome win.

Adrian Gallagher kicked five goals in Carlton's 29-point win over Melbourne. John Nicholls and John Goold also did well for the Blues, while Ken Rowe tried hard for the Demons. - Football Record.

The Blues were too good in all departments for the Melbourne side.
John Nicholls was outstanding and his rover Adrian Gallagher finished off Big Nick's good work.
"In a sense it was an exhibition of ruck play by Nicholls, since the resistance was negligible.
His hit-outs were directed with meticulous accuracy and he gave smaller players freedom of movement by using his big frame vigorously in the packs. With Nicholls in such a commanding mood, Gallagher had a luxury game, with scores of chances and plenty of time to make the best of them. Gallagher also took good marks under pressure in the forward line, and kicked the heavy ball long and accurately for his five goals." (The Age August 15)

Umpire Perkins penalised players 5 times for kicking the ball deliberately out of bounds.
In the first quarter John Comben was the first to receive one of these frees, from which he goaled.
The Age said;.
"There could have been no 'daylight' at all showing as he took his kick from the boundary line in the forward pocket. Comben held the ball in the reverse torpedo position and it spun around the posts."
