Shane Whitnall is the older brother of Carlton's Lance Whitnall and the son of former player Graeme Whitnall. He was recruited from Lalor via the TAC Cup Team the Northern Knights. He played two seasons with the Carlton Reserves in 1996 and 1997 as a supplementary list player. He then headed off to VFL Club Werribee for the 1998 season. Whitnall would later play for VFL club Box Hill, later Seymour in the Goulburn Valley, and in 2002 VFL team the Bendigo Pioneers.

In 2003 Whitnall played in the EDFL with East Keilor that was being coached by ex Blue reserves and U/19's player Julian Shanks.

He was infamously involved in a familiy feud years later with younger brother Lance that was sparked by a falling out at a familiy gathering. This incident made the print and TV media.

Whitnall also played as a top-up player for Footscray reserves in 1995.
