Game Review

Revisit Rounds 01 Carlton won their first game since Round 4 against 11th placed North Melbourne to jump back above Richmond on the ladder.

Carlton moved back into 9th but were well and truly off the pace in 1955, sitting 7 wins behind ladder leaders and eventual Premiers Melbourne.

The Blues mades mistakes, but so did North. Carlton played stronger against the wind, and their strength, and systematic play won the day for them. Best on the ground was Bruce Comben, he repeatedly saved the day and cleared the ball well out of defence. The two spearheads were a highlight. North's Jock Spencer booted 8.3 while Carlton's straight shooter Noel O'Brien bagged 7.0! Most of Spencer's goals came from free kicks, causing Carlton's defenders to be mysterfied, full back George Ferry; "I was not even near him on several occasions (and) he was awarded a free kick"

Ken Hands is still hampered with a shin injury, preferring often to hand pass rather than kicking the ball.

Carlton coach Perc Bentley

"The fact that we fielded our strongest and most balanced side possible was of major importance in our win. The balance was particularly noticeable up forward. Defenders also again rose to the occasion and in the third quarter really swung the game in our favor. Finally the inclusion of captain Ken Hands and John Chick gave a great boost to the team."
