Canfield played 9 games, and kicked 2 goals, in that most esteemed of Carlton guernsey's, the #1, after debuting in Season 1977. He was recruited from St Vincents College (Junortoun, Bendigo). In 1978, he returned to the family farm to learn the trade from his father, he was captain/coach of Birchip at the age of 20.

Canfield shared his debut with Peter Bedford.

In 1975 Canfield wore No. 35 and No.54 whilst playing reserve grade football for the Blues.
