Carlton's has used its first-round selection in the 2023 AFL Draft on Ashton Moir. A dual-sided threat, the Blues have welcomed enigmatic forward Ashton Moir to the Club, selecting the Glenelg product with pick No.29 in the 2023 AFL Draft. The versatile attacker is one of the most talented players in his draft pool, having long been on the radar of AFL clubs after bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old. Hitting the scoreboard for the Bays regularly in the SANFL Under-18s and Reserves competitions, Moir has also plied his trade for the South Australian representative side for the last two years as well as the AFL Academy in 2023. Standing at 187cm, Moir has the capacity to play both tall and small, challenging opposition defenders in the air with his vertical leap as well as his trickery at ground level: Moir finished fifth in the agility test at the national combine.

A player who combines his flair with the ball along with his physicality without it, the 18-year-old will add a different dimension to Carlton’s forward mix, joining the likes of Corey Durdin and Jesse Motlop who have been welcomed to the Club in recent years through the national draft. The evasive Moir has a distinct feature of his game, taking set shots with either his left or right foot depending on the situation: he’s got as many tricks as anyone in his draft pool, and now he’ll be aiming to hone his craft at IKON Park. Ashton Moir is of Burmese decent who kicks on both feet thanks to his parents' Taekwondo background.

Carlton’s Head of List Management Nick Austin said Moir was an untapped talent who will be keen on showing what he can do in Navy Blue. “We couldn’t be happier to be welcoming Ashton to Carlton: he’s one who we think will have our fans on the edge of their seats with excitement for a long time to come,” Austin said. “At 18 years of age, he’s got a number of weapons to his game and he’s only going to get better with more time in the elite environment. He attacks contests at speed, he can get the better of opponents in the air and on the ground, plus he’s a smart finisher around goals. “We’ve made it a clear focus in recent seasons to add to our forward mix, and we think Ashton will further complement what we’ve got as he continues to refine his craft – he’s someone that’s been on draft radars for a long time. “He’s played a lot of football in the last two years across a number of different teams, so we’re looking forward to him getting down to Melbourne, pulling on the Navy Blue and getting to work alongside his new teammates.”

Ashton Moir's original clubs were Plympton and Glenelg (SANFL).
