Game ReviewStephen Silvagni was welcomed back and as he had done so successfully in Round 13 was played at full forward. It once again paid off and he kicked 5 goals. Despite being bottom of the ladder, Melbourne would take it right up to Carlton, as they always seemed to do, regardless of ladder positions. It was goal for goal throughout the first half, with the Demons 4 points up at half time. In the third quarter, Melbourne took control, booting 6 goals to 3, to take a 21 point lead at the final change. Carlton were unable to bridge the gap in the last quarter, both teams kicking 2 goals, to go down by 19 points.
The midfield was well held and outpaced, other than Greg Williams, who had 32 possessions. Kernahan was also well held, while Brad Pearce was showing signs of returning to form but then went down with a calf injury. The defenders struggled without Silvagni, with Michael Sexton gaining 27 possessions.
To add to Carlton's woes, Allan was reported and suspended for a week, leaving Carlton's ruck stocks severely depleted.
