1887 Carlton Football Club on it's second tour of Adelaide played 5 games for 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw.
In it's final game against Port Adelaide, on the Adelaide Oval July 16 1887, due to injuries, the club was two players short.
Melling of Adelaide F.C. and George Coombe of Norwood F.C. played for Carlton.
Port Adelaide objected, but gave way rather than have the match abandoned.

There was a player called Melling who played many games for Fitzroy in the 1890's, it seems this is the same person.

"A sum of nearly £250 has been handed by the Fitzroy Club to their principal trainer, E. Melling, who was, in his day, a notable footballer. Melling has been out of health, but is fortunately on the mend. The amount subscribed does much credit to the organisers of the benefit, and to the Fitzroy Football Club." (Weekly Times May 26 1917)
