Robert 'Henry' Lawson was a tall skinny ruckman / key position player who graduated from the Carlton U/19's through to Reserve Grade Football with the Blues. Lawson played in the Blues U/19's premiership in 1979 that was coached by former Blues star wingman Bryan Quirk. Whilst playing in the thirds Lawson wore No.27 whilst playing at CHB in the winning Grand Final team. He played the next season (1980) in the Reserves, he started the the 1981 season at Carlton but early into it he would head west to play with Claremont in the WAFL. The Claremont team was very strong that season and he would play a solitary game for them as they went onto win the 1981 WAFL premiership that season.

Lawson would head back to Victoria after he was recruited by the Melbourne FC in 1982 where he played a full season in the reserves wearing number 37. Lawson would have a run in the seniors when he was promoted to play in a night game for the Demons during the mid-season competition that was played on a Tuesday night at VFL Park at Waverley.

Lawson later headed to local VFA Club Brunswick where former Blues U/19's premiership teammate Alan Hamilton was playing. Also at Brunswick, there were other former Carlton players in Tony West, Malcolm Toy, Matthew Scully, Stephen Buckley and Neil Robertson .

In 1985 Lawson would line up at Centre-Half Forward when Brunswick defeated Oakleigh in the 1985 2nd Division Grand Final. Two former Blues including David Whillas, (and ex-Bomber) in Tony West also represented the Association Magpies that day. Lawson would kick a goal and be named as second best player that day for the Wicks.

Lawson was originally recruited from Moomba Park and Hadfield FC's.

He did not manage a senior game for Carlton.

Robert Lawson's daughter Genevieve Lawson-Tavan was drafted by Carlton's AFLW team for the 2023 season.
