Spiro Kourkoumelis - a member of Carlton's 1986 Reserves Premiership side - was playing with St. Kilda in this Grand Final.

Phil Poursanidis was Carlton's Under 19 captain. He booted 8 goals in this Grand Final, after kicking 5 goals against Footscray in the Preliminary Final at Waverley the week before.

Mark Edwards played in Carlton's match against North Melbourne at the Oval in England, which became known as 'The Battle of Britain.' He was reported, suspended, then seriously injured his knee during the next two pre-seasons and disappeared off the scene.

Andrew Phillips, who had given up a promising tennis career to play football for Carlton, was playing his first game since being injured during the 1st quarter of the Reserves game against Fitzroy at Princes Park in Round 21. The youngest "new players" who had started the season in the Under 19s were Fraser Brown and Luke O'Sullivan and both would have long careers at Carlton.
