Game Review

Carlton barely escaped with the win in this third and last of the Sectional rounds, but that was perfectly understandable. The Blues had already qualified for the finals in third place, and their focus lay a fortnight ahead.

The most significant aspect of this game in the long term was the debut for Carlton of future dual Premiership ruckman Jim Marchbank. A few years later, Jim would be desperately unlucky to miss out on playing in all of Carlton’s first three flag sides.

St Kilda were probably unlucky in this game, too. They could have set up a big lead in the first quarter when they kept the Blues scoreless – but five shots at goal produced 0.5, and they were eventually beaten by three points.

The Prahran Telegraph of September 5 described the crowd as the largest to attend the Junction Oval that season.
