David Johnson played reserve grade football for Carlton in 1999, he was used as a top-up player for the reserves team. He was rookie listed by Essendon for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Johnson was originally recruited from Sunbury via TAC Cup team the Calder Cannons.

He didn't play a senior game for Carlton.

Johnson played 70 games and kicked 15 goals for Geelong from 2002 to 2007, his brother is the former Essendon premiership player and Fremantle Docker Mark Johnson.
