Game Review

This match was played in a fierce wind at Corio Oval, making precise play and accurate kicking very difficult. Carlton held a handy lead at half time, before the Pivots added 3.5 to 1.2 in the second half, to level the scores. The Blues were somewhat fortunate to escape with a draw, as Geelong seemingly struggled to convert the easiest of opportunities.

This result could have been a setback for Carlton, but other matches fell our way and we leap-frogged to third place, two points ahead of Melbourne, Collingwood and Essendon. This was just the Blues' second drawn match since the inception of the VFL in 1897. The first was against Melbourne in round 9. 1898.

Umpire Assaulted

Umpire Crapp (an ex-Carlton player) was attacked by a disgruntled home fan as he left the ground. Despite the seriousness of such an incident, one can imagine the taunts possible with that surname! The offender was arrested and taken away by police. On July 19 Umpire Henry Crapp appeared in the Geelong Court where the defendant pleaded guilty to striking. He was fined 40 shillings and ordered to pay £3/16s in costs.
