Game Review

Despite controlling the match for long periods and having eight more scoring shots, Carlton accounted for an under-strength Brisbane by just 13 points in this scrappy contest on a Saturday night at the Gabba in Brisbane. Inspired by Jarrad Waite at full-forward – who hauled in 12 marks, kicked three goals, and set up as many again - the Blues weathered a second-quarter onslaught by the Lions to rack up their fifth win of the season and climb back into the top eight.

In the wake of a workman-like victory over Port Adelaide in round 8, Carlton made just one change for their trek to the northern capital, with Bryce Gibbs an automatic inclusion at the expense of Troy Menzel. Conversely, the Lions had been depleted by tribunal suspensions handed out to defenders Merrett and Clarke, and they suffered another blow when midfielder Mitch Golby was a late withdrawal. Small forward Josh Green was named as their substitute, while Carlton opted for Josh Bootsma.

On a calm, perfect night for football, the opening bounce was won for Carlton by Robbie Warnock, and the stage was set for the rest of the game when Ed Curnow found Waite on the lead inside the 50-metre arc. But Jarrad’s shot drifted off-line, and Brisbane drew first blood with a fine running goal to Bewick at the 2-minute mark. From then on, the Blues dominated the quarter - booting 6.5 to 3.1. In fact, the margin should have been greater, because Waite, Bell and Kreuzer also missed relatively easy attempts.

Apart from Waite, Kane Lucas and Mitch Robinson provided lively targets in attack for the Blues throughout the first stanza; and booted two goals apiece. Brock McLean stood out in the midfield, as did Jaryd Cachia, in a run-with role on Lions playmaker Brent Moloney. Brisbane coach Michael Voss showed faith in his team by not making any positional changes at quarter-time – a decision that seemed to have backfired after seven minutes of the second quarter. Waite’s second goal, and another to Jeff Garlett stretched Carlton’s advantage to 32 points, before Moloney inspired his team by bursting through a pack and kicking truly for Brisbane’s fourth. Immediately the Lions lifted, and played hard, determined football for the rest of the quarter.

Tackling with real desperation, running in numbers, and with their beanpole ruckman Matthew Leuenberger on top around the stoppages, they piled on another five unanswered goals in the last 15 minutes of the term, snatching a 3-point lead at the long break. Meanwhile, the Blues and their supporters seemed stunned and the half-time siren brought much-needed respite.

Carlton’s coaching staff worked hard to refocus their charges during the interval, although it was the Lions who took up the early running again in the third term. But vital misses by Rockcliff and Zorko - each from set-shots inside the 50-metre line – stalled the home side’s momentum. That was all that Carlton needed, and when Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown felled Michael Jamison with a clumsy fend-off, it fired-up the Blues.

Captain and ex-captain; Marc Murphy and Chris Judd, led the revival, and the Blues attacked relentlessly to regain the lead through goals to Murphy and Waite. Cachia had fought back to subdue Moloney again, and with McLean, Murphy and Judd getting on top, the Blues surged forward time after time – only for the goal-kicking yips to once again emerge and frustrate fans and coaches alike.

Waite, Garlett and Scotland all missed gettable shots, before Waite chipped to Lucas just outside the goal-square, and Kane’s third goal stretched the Blues’ advantage to 18 points a the 18-minute mark. Both sides activated their substitutes late in the term; Simon White came off for Carlton, and Green replaced McGrath for Brisbane after Leuenberger’s excellent palm-down to Bewick brought up Brisbane’s tenth goal to keep the Lions well and truly in the contest. Dennis Armfield then used his pace to crumb a reply for Carlton, and at three-quarter time the difference between the sides was 16 points.

Matthew Kruezer’s neat tap to Chris Judd for a goal in the first minutes of the last quarter preceded another rash of missed chances, this time by Brisbane. After three consecutive behinds, the Lions persistence was rewarded by a goal to Green – but they then suffered a near-mortal blow when Leuenberger was taken from the field with a dislocated thumb. With no other recognised ruckman in their side, the Lions did not win another tap-out for the remainder of the match.

There were injury concerns for Carlton late in proceedings as well – McLean was slammed into the ground in a tackle, and Mitch Robinson clashed heads with his opponent in a marking contest – but after Leuenberger’s demise the Blues comfortably maintained their advantage through to the final siren.

Apart from Waite’s pivotal role, particularly in the first three quarters, the Blues were best-served by Judd, McLean, Murphy and Lucas, with a special mention to Jaryd Cachia. Although outplayed by a tough, experienced competitor in Moloney during the second quarter, Jaryd stuck to his guns and came out on top in just his fourth senior game, having gathered 20 possessions (8 contested) 6 marks and 5 tackles.

Subs: Josh Bootsma replaced Simon White after 20 minutes of the third quarter.
