Game Review

Carlton trailed Richmond until the last quarter of this high-standard match at Punt Road, before vanquishing the Tigers by 19 points. In doing so, the Blues retained their unbeaten record at Richmond’s home ground, as well as top place on the VFL ladder.

Coming off a narrow defeat by Essendon in the previous round, Carlton’s only changes were brought about by injury. Billy Payne and Dick Harris dropped out, replaced by the experienced duo of Percy Sheehan and Bill Goddard. The Tigers named a young side with an average of less than 20 games per player, and during the first half at least, their enthusiasm and bold play swept Carlton aside. Inspired by their promising centre half-forward Tom Heaney, the Tigers jumped away to an early lead, and seemed set for a memorable victory when they were still ahead by nine points at three-quarter time.

But as fatigue set in, and the experience and vigour of Carlton’s rucks took control, the Blues surged home to another decisive victory. Best for Carlton in a very even team were Marchbank, McGregor, Sheehan, Gotz and Clark.

In other matches, Essendon retained second spot on the ladder by beating Geelong, and Collingwood scraped home by 4 points over a gritty University at Victoria Park to hold third. Although well beaten, Geelong stayed fourth, ahead of South Melbourne and the Students.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 156.6.
