Carlton lost to Essendon by 99 points - MCG. A sad and sorry day as the Blues were blitzed through midfield.

Game Review

An apparent late season resurgence by the Blues was torn apart by our performance in this game against the Bombers. Recent wins over Collingwood and Richmond, both highlighting some of the young players coming through on our list including Simpson, Bentick and Fisher, were forgotten as the Bombers piled on 9 goals in the first quarter and were never threatened by a weak Carlton effort.

It didn't start that way. The Blues came out firing, controlling the first 10 minutes of the game and kicking the first 3 goals, with Adam Bentick particularly dominant with 2 or 3 clearances. But the Essendon counter-punch was never countered itself, and no leaders from the Blues would come out to stop the rot. They kicked 9 unanswered goals and ended up 38 points in front at the first change. Captain Koutoufides was well held by Bomber tall tagger Mark Bolton. Scott Camporeale, at this stage of the season playing from the back pocket after being relegated from the midfield mid-season, while managing 31 possessions, paid scant regard to his direct opponent Ricky Dyson, who would kick 3 goals. Full Forward Fevola was again sent to full back to be given a lesson by Lloyd after failing to record any goals. Digby Morrell was the most effective forward with 3 goals. Heath Scotland finished with 26 touches and 11 marks, while Lance Whitnall took 10 and had 22 possessions.

In a record breaking score for the Bombers, Carlton suffered their largest loss for the year and the biggest since some of our horrible demolitions in 2004.

There would be only one more game for Carlton in 2005, but it was clear now that the wooden spoon was ours. And perhaps, on this performance, we all knew we deserved it.
