Game Review

Carlton's mid-season resurgence stalled with a narrow loss to the Western Bulldogs on this Saturday evening at Docklands. In front by three points at half-time, the Blues went goalless in the third term and that proved costly, as the absence of key players and a couple of extra injuries left the Blues short of fire power in the later stages of an entertaining contest.

Gunning for a third win in a row against the seventh-placed Bulldogs, the Blues were unable to call on injured trio Andrew Carrazzo, Sam Docherty and Troy Menzel. Blaine Boekhorst, Blaine Johnson and Michael Jamison came into the team on selection night, before two late changes saw Sam Rowe and David Ellard replaced by Mark Whiley and Jason Tutt. On a cool Saturday evening under the closed roof at Docklands, the Westerners bounced out of the blocks and kicked 2.1 in this first five minutes. Levi Casboult replied for Carlton midway through the term, but that was the only major kicked by the Blues before quarter-time, when the Bulldogs led by 14 points.

In the first minute of the second quarter, Dylan Buckley brought many of the crowd of 31,445 to their feet when he threaded through a spectacular goal from deep in a forward pocket. Carlton lifted and took control for the next fifteen minutes or so, although a series of missed shots on goal produced a disappointing return of 3.6 – including a moment of slapstick comedy when the Blues looked set for an easy 6-pointer with Cameron Wood and Levi Casboult alone in the forward 50. A long kick landed between the pair, and one of them should have strolled into goal – but they butchered the opportunity and were lucky to score a point. Still, Carlton had momentum at half-time, and had hit the front by 3 points.

One of the turning points of the game came during the long interval, when the Bulldogs substituted one of their ruckman for 167 cm first-gamer Caleb Daniel. The bustling youngster sparked the dogs with his tenacity in the midfield, and they snatched back the initiative by kicking 3.4 to Carlton’s 0.4 to lead by a handy 15 points with a quarter to play.

Early in the final term, after the Bulldogs had added two goals in three minutes, Carlton hearts sank when Patrick Cripps limped off the field and out of the game with a damaged ankle. The Blues plugged away and kicked the last three goals of the match, but time ran out with the Dogs hanging on for an 11-point victory.

Marc Murphy, Nick Graham, Zach Tuohy and Cripps (until injured) stood out for Carlton, along with Dennis Armfield, who could have been a match-winner had his shooting for goal been more productive. Dennis finished with 2.4 from his six attempts, and was dangerous throughout. He even took a pack mark!

Carlton sat 16th on the competition ladder after this game, one win ahead of the two Queensland teams; Gold Coast and Brisbane.
