Game Review

A true milestone game was not enough to get Carlton over the line in this game, which was played on the Queen's Birthday holiday on Monday. Templeton's nine goals on Monday against Carlton's Geoff Southby was a superb effort. Templeton was well held in the first half, but cut loose in the second half and was unbeatable. The Bulldogs overran the Blues in the last quarter with an eight goals to goals blitz.

Carlton led by as much as 53 points late in the second quarter before Captain Coach Jesaulenko went off with a leg injury. From there Footscray seemed to lift & stormed over the top of the Blues.

It led the press to ponder loudly "No Jezza, No Blues". A stigma that continued until the corrresponding Round 10 match the year after in which Stan Magro shirt-fronted Jezza before half-time yet Carlton recovered from a 5 goal half-time deficit without him to win by 10 points.

David McKay would become the second youngest Blue in history to play 200 games, a record that still places him in the greats for the Carlton Football Club, only beaten since that time by Lance Whitnall almost 30 years later.
