Game Review

This was a fierce, even battle throughout the first half - befitting a match with so much at stake. But in the third quarter, Essendon's bean-pole full forward Paul Salmon was just too tall for a tiring Blues defence, and the Bombers skipped away to an easy victory.

Salmon ended the day with seven goals, all the other matches in the round followed the script, and by Sunday night, Carlton had been tipped out of the five. Suddenly, the alarm bells were ringing at Princes Park.

The time has come for some moves at Carlton land. The old brigade of players cannot continue to win games for the Blues. The spark in the Blues seems to be going to miss a few weeks through a hamstring injury. The side played well for a half against Essendon but, sadly fell apart. Young players that I would give a go are Murphy, Williams, Alvin, Dean and Rohde. - Ray Shaw Inside Football.

Giant Bomber spearhead Paul Salmon kicked seven goals to take his tally for the season to 50. And that was just one piece of bad news for the Blues. They had no answer to the tough Essendon combination, and carved in to lose by 47 points. Tony Elshaug was effective for the Bombers. Des English and Bruce Doull were consistent triers for Carlton. Blues top scorer was Warren Ralph, with two goals. - Football Record.

Carlton continued its slide from grace, lowering its colours to Essendon for the eighth consecutive time. The Dons were "jumped" by the Blues, but evened the score by half-time, then proceeded to demolish the visitors, adding eight goals to one in the final hour. - Football Record.
