Game Review

This was the first game that these two sides played since their infamous "Battle of Britain" in which both sides turned an exhibition match in London into a slugfest. In contrast to that infamous London game, this game was relatively low key on the physical side of things. Whilst both sides being very competitive there was none of the spiteful fighting that had occurred at the end season clash.

Carlton had to withstand a last quarter surge from North Melbourne before it could leave VFL Park as the victor. The Blues led North by a whopping 50 points at three quarter time, but in the space of just 10 minutes in the final term, the inspired Roos reduced the margin to a mere seven points. A goal to Carlton strongman Jon Dorotich steadied the situation for the Blues and they eventually run out 13 point winners. Captain Stephen Kernahan (six goals) and former skipper Wayne Johnston set up Carlton's success with outstanding play throughout the match. - Tony Greenberg Inside Football.
