Game Review

Carlton's perfect start to the season was ruined by this narrow defeat to the Fuschias. Melbourne would change their nick-name to the much more inspiring "Demons" when Checker Hughes became coach after season 1931.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 154.7.

Stoned An Umpire

Man Fined £10

Melbourne July 6
Just escaping a gaol sentence, Thomas Frederick Sayers (27), a labourer, was fined £10 at the Carlton Court for having thrown a stone at Umpire J. C. Kain, at the conclusion of the Carlton-Melbourne match at the Carlton Oval on Saturday. This was a sequel to the mobbing of the umpire by hundreds of Carlton barrackers after their team had lost.
"The only thing that has saved you going to gaol is that you are a first offender," said Mr. Wade P.M., "If the umpire had been struck, you would have been sent to gaol in any case."
