Game Review

The Blues early-season form indicated we were an improved side from 1897, and we collected this victory as expected over the competition easy-beats - although the 10-point margin suggests that the Saints put up a fight.

History was made in this match, with the first report in the League's history. Field umpire Ivo Crapp, an ex-Carlton player in the VFA, reported St. Kilda's Bill Matthews for "bad language." At the tribunal hearing, Matthews was found guilty and reprimanded. This was the only umpires' report in the first two seasons of the VFL.

By this stage, Essendon, Fitzroy, Melbourne and Geelong made up the top four, followed by Collingwood, South Melbourne, Carlton and St Kilda. The hapless Saints were winless, with a percentage of 33.7.
