Game Review
This loss to the Swans would be the final game for Peter Motley, who had a car crash on the way home from training on Thursday night, that finished his career.No doubt the Swans would still be on a high after their thrilling seven point win over Carlton on Friday night. Their running players - Healy, Bolton, Murphy and Mitchell carved us up in the first half, but it's testimony to the Carlton persistence that the Swans only got up by one straight kick and a bit, in the finish. Following the boys great win over the Eagles, coach Robert Walls was almost convinced that his side had kicked their spasmodic play. Given the fact that the Blues only really turned it on for a quarter, Robbie may be back to square one. Make no mistake, the Swans are a fantastic side - strong, fast, talented ball-hogs who, to their credit, fought back to weather the Carlton storm. At this stage they seem the yardsticks of the competition, but there's a long way to go and the Blues have a great chance to bounce back against Geelong, er Geelong, this week. I reckon Peter Motley will get the job of tagging "Gazza", leaving team-mates like Meldrum, Glascott, Bradley and Rhys-Jones to wreck havoc. - Carl Toner Inside Football.
Stephen Kernahan played another brilliant game for the Blues with 19 disposals, 10 marks and 5.5 on the scoreboard. His efforts were all to no avail because after taking the lead in the last quarter the Blues failed to keep the Swans out. An interesting statistic to come out of the night game concerned the total marks. Up until three-quarter time 98 marks had been taken (50 to the Blues and 48 to the Swans). However, only 11 marks were taken in the last quarter by the two sides (5 Swans & 6 Blues). Again it was the Swans handball that broke the back of their opposition. The Swans finished the game with 48 more handballs than Carlton. Sydney are still the most proficient handballers in the League. - Footy Week.
