Game Review

A swirling, blustery wind and frequent showers made skilled football impossible in this match, and kicking for goal was a nightmare. Despite the absence of Horrie Clover and Billy Blackman, Carlton was expected to win easily at home, but the conditions evened up the contest.

In the last minute of the match, Fitzroy were on the verge of victory - in front by 1 point, and with play bottled up on the boundary at half-forward. Whether by luck or by arrangement (we probably will never know for sure) one of Carlton’s followers jumped high at a boundary throw in, and punched the ball over his head, into the path of winger Dick Wittmann. Dick's desperate long kick for goal bounced at the top of an unguarded goal-square, and slithered through for a point to draw the match.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 117.7.

Harry Bell

Saturday's Herald p1 (sporting edition) in the match report said , "Carlton's only change was Bell, a local junior, who replaced Clover."
The Herald's team line up had Harry Bell in the forward pocket instead of Edric Bickford. Neither player is mentioned in the Herald, Age or Argus match reports.
However, next Saturday's Herald (p2 sporting edition), mentions five changes made to the Carlton team and Harry Bell was one of the omissions.
