Game Review

Carlton’s appalling start to 2014 continued when Essendon put them to the sword on this Sunday evening at the MCG. Behind at every change, and individually and collectively beaten all over the ground, the beleaguered Blues slumped to 15th on the ladder, under a welter of criticism and with their finals hopes in tatters.

Concluding a horror week when Chris Judd and Matthew Kreuzer both succumbed to nagging injuries and were ruled out for extended periods, Carlton made two changes to the side beaten by Richmond in round 2. Brock McLean and Kane Lucas were axed, for the welcome return of the two Andrews; Walker and Carrazzo. Tom Bell was named as substitute.

In contrast to Carlton, Essendon had started the year impressively, although the black cloud of the ongoing ASADA investigation into their 2013 supplements program continued to hang over them. Having beaten North Melbourne, and almost beaten reigning premiers Hawthorn, the Bombers were entrenched in the top eight and looking to stay there. A crowd of almost 63,000 turned up, anticipating a close contest on an excellent night for football, but from the opening bounce it was all Essendon.

The Bombers kicked their first goal after two minutes of play, and from then on the ball was rarely outside their half of the field. They looked taller, heavier and faster than the Blues in most positions, and their poise under Carlton’s mediocre pressure stood out. Leading by six goals to nil at quarter-time, Essendon increased their lead during every quarter and eventually won by 81 points.

On an occasion bereft of highlights of any kind for Carlton supporters, the return of Carrazzo (23 disposals, 5 tackles) and Walker (27 possessions, 5 marks) was perhaps the only glimmer of consolation. Captain Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Kade Simpson tried hard to lift their side, and Rob Warnock won the individual ruck duels. Apart from that, it was a disaster that should be wiped from our memories as soon as possible.

Subs: Tom Bell replaced Simon White late in the third quarter (25 minute mark).
