Wednesday's Argus p11;"Vallance is in bed at Baccus Marsh with a sprained ankle. Clover is also in bed suffering from influenza. Fred Williams has a broken nose, and Huxtable has a bruised thigh. The captain (Ray Brew) was training last evening, and may be able to play on Saturday."Danny" Wheelahan, from South Melbourne, was also at training, and hopes to get his clearance."
Carlton won their first match of Season 1931 by defeating Fitzroy by 40 points. A massive 8 goal last quarter put the result beyond any doubt, after the 2 teams were within 2-3 goals of each other throughout. The turnstiles couldn't cope with the huge crowd that wanted admission and about 1,000 people pushed the gates open and surged into the ground.
Fitzroy had the best of the game in the first quarter and the Blues were fortunate to have been only 11 points in arrears at the first break. A complete turn around occurred in the second term. What the home team was doing right in the first quarter was seemed to be transferred to Carlton except the Blues' backline held out the opposition. The ball hardly passed the centre and Fitzroy only managed one point as the Blues pilied on 5.7 The 'Roys only outscored the Blues by 7 points and faced a 15 point deficit at the last break. They managed to reduce the lead to 11 points, but from then on it was all Carlton in the final quarter.
Carlton were 6th on the ladder after 2 rounds with a percentage of 115.5.

According to Monday's Argus this was Carlton's highest score against Fitzroy, just surpassing the 20.12.132 scored in 1929.Friday's Argus said the two teams had met 82 times, with Carlton winning 46, Fitzroy 33, and three draws.
