Game Review
Carlton won their first game for the year, this one against eventual Premiers Collingwood.Collingwood kicking with the wind, rattled on four goals in the first six to eight minutes, before the Blues realised the game was on. Then they kicked into gear. From that moment Carlton began to dominate the 'Woods around the ground but not necessarily on the scoreboard.
Joe Shortill to Darcy Lear and he scored the Blues' first. Then Harry Greaves got the ball to Vin Gardiner who bought up the second major. Rod McGregor playing well chipped in, then made a mistake, regained possession of the ball, and booted the Blues' third. At quarter time Carlton trailed by seven points.
After the Blues had seven attempts to score without troubling the goal umpire, Joe Shortell reduced the margin to just one point, Billy Dick then scored a goal and then Vin Gardiner booted another. This gave the Blues a three point lead at half time.
The wind increased and blew toward the pocket. There was a lot of fumbling by both teams. Harry Houghton, Percy Daykin, Billy Dick and William Dunn combined and the seventh goal went up on the board. Ted Brown delivered the ball to Vin Gardiner who goaled. Carlton led by a solitary point at the last break, but had the use of the strong wind in the last term.
The Blues completely dominated the last quarter adding 5.1 to 1 point. The newspaper reports don't give the order of the goal kickers for the last term, but Billy Dick booted two, William Dunn, Jack Greenhill, and Joe Shortill one each. The Blues running out winners by 31 points.
"There were about 6,000 people at the game between Carlton and Collingwood played on Prince's Oval, and the striking impression of the two teams when afield was the greatly superior physique of Carlton. They had a number of their bigger men in again, amongst them Dick, O'Brien, and Houghton, yet I have seldom known a game in which Carlton were more considerate in the use of their strength."
