Game Review

Carlton's shocking inaccuracy around the goals cost us dearly and we lost to the Tigers by 5 points at home. This was Carlton's 1,100th League game. For a summary of Carlton's eleventh 100 League games, click here.

Carlton, needing to win to make the Four, were terribly off-target and eventually lost this game by a slender 5 points. Bad kicking is bad football. - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.

Carlton threw away it's chance of winning with appalling goal kicking, 36 shots for only 7 goals. But is was not only the scoring that lost the game, the Blues slipped back to their comical handpassing and short game play of early in the season. Only in the last quarter did Carlton show any of it's recent good form. That was mainly down to one footballer, Johnny James who was magnificent all day. James played at centre half back in the first half an kept his opponent, Poulter, almost kickless. After half time he was switched to centre half forward where he kicked three goals off his own boot. However, the move left his early opponent Poulter off the leash and he kicked four straight in the second half to win the game for the Tigers.

After the game Bruce Comben was in a daze, he had played almost the entire game concussed and was unware of what was happening around him during the game.
He was one of the few Blues to show any fight.

Carlton coach Jim Francis

"I was disappointed, but at the same time very pleased by the way our fellows fought it right out at the finish. Our kicking in front of goal cost us the game. The scoreboard tells the whole story. I don't want to detract from Richmond's win, but I thought we had more opportunities to win than in any game this season."
