Game Review
An amazing game. Absolutely no room in this ground (for such a big club, it really was a poor stadium). The crowd was on edge all game with the advantage ebbing and flowing. Has a team ever dominated a match so much and lost?
Collingwood's 7 goals were all scored in an 11-minute period of the third quarter. Carlton old boy, Craig Davis led the way for the 'pies with four goals.
Just before the siren, 'The Buzz' (Peter Bosustow) had half a chance to score the winning goal (or at least a point). * (see footnote)
Carlton defender Ken Hunter again proved his consistency with a fine display. Hunter was cool and effective and polled votes in this game. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
Hafey's Blues
I wouldn't think Collingwood coach Tom Hafey would be too happy with his side's one point win over Carlton on Saturday. Collingwood seemed set for a big victory due to several factors. Carlton had to play in the Escort Cup Grand Final on the Tuesday night, it had top defenders Geoff Southby, Val Perovic, Rod Austin and Robbert Klomp out injured and it was facing Collingwood at Victoria Park. Yet the Blues still got within a point of the Woods and, according to most reports should have won because they had more of the play. I feel Carlton coach David Parkin can take heart from that performance knowing that his side can improve immeasurably for any future encounter against Collingwood. - Doug Wade, Inside Football
Carlton's Bruce Doull played his 250th game at Victoria Park. After the Blues had control of the first half, the Magpies bounced back to kick six goals in nine minutes early in the third quarter. Collingwood eventually won the match by just one point with South Australian recruit Mark Williams the star for the Magpies. - Football Record.
