Game Review

Helped by Collingwood's wayward shooting for goal - particularly in the third quarter - Carlton scored an invaluable win at Victoria Park.

Resolute defender Brian Buckley (whose two sons would later also wear the navy blue strip) played the first of his 116 games, and nippy rover Jack Mills capitalised on a winning Carlton ruck to steer through four goals.

A great day for football with the ground firm, fast, and with a slight breeze. After a fairly even three quarters, in the last, Carlton were too fast for the Woods. The home team were run off their feet and the Navy Blues won running away. Those speedy and damaging players were backmen John James and Denis Zeunert, rover Doug Beasy, Laurie Kerr at half-forward, and John Chick on the wing. Unusually, the Blues dominated in the air with Bill Milroy, Peter Webster, and Graham Donaldson taking the big grabs. Scores were even during the third and last quarters. Ingredients for the victory, as well as speed, were stamina, and, at the finish, almost all-round superiority.

Carlton coach Jim Francis:

"In a hard game all day we made the game safe by coming back in the last quarter with determination and fighting spirit. It was a grand performance, because we always have trouble at Collingwood, and I'm proud of the boys. Our fast play-on game worried Collingwood all day, and we finished the stronger."

Best; Mills, Milroy, Webster, Donaldson, Kerr, Chick, Beasy, Ferry.
