Game Review
An outstanding start by the Blues set up a victory.New full forward Ross Ousley scored the first goal from a kick off the ground, within minutes of the start. The Blues out classed the Dons when the ball was brought to ground, however, Carlton were beaten in the air. This will be important in September as teams like Melbourne have few players of less than 6 foot. Defenders Comben, James and Ferry were outstanding, as well as forward flankers Kerr and Beasy who at times flashed in with his brilliance. Milroy at centre-half forward and in the ruck played well.
Although the Blues enjoyed a 40 point win, "the Dons fritted away countless opportunities with hurried and haphazard kicking. They had 25 (including 5 attempts that failed to score) shots for a poor return of 5.15."
Carlton Coach Jim Francis
"Under heavy conditions we lasted it out better than Essendon. I thought we won because of our backing up and better co-operation especially on the forward line. I was pleased with the job done by Ross Ousley at full forward. For a first up appearance in that position he did remarkably well. He led and marked in fine style."Best; Comben, James, Hamilton, Ferry, Kerr, Milroy.
Scorers; Ousley 2.4, Hamilton 2.3, Beasy 2.1, Kerr 2.0, Donaldson 1.1, Milroy 1.1, Hands 1.0, Clarke 1.0, Bosustow 0.1, rushed 2.
