Game Review
Carlton would win their 8th match of the year, easily more than their entire 1925, by defeating St Kilda at home.Eight changes were made with the Carlton team wearing black arm bands in recogition of the death Frank Irwin's father.
Ray Brew won the toss and the Blues kicked to the Garton or Lygon Street end.
From the centre Horrie Clover marked, fortunately his poor kick resulted in Harry Vallence gaining the ball and he passed to Harold Carter who snapped the first goal. The Saints attacked but wasted some easy opportunities.
Jimmy Robertson received a free kick and goaled from the boundary line. St.Kilda went forward and they scored their first major. The Blues replied almost immediately when Tom Mullens marked and kicked truly. Alex Duncan was solid in defence. The Saints then broke through again for their second goal. The ball was racing end to end but neither side could add to the goal tally. The quarter ended with Carlton leading by 7 points, but the visitors had missed some easy chances.
St.KIlda did all the attacking early in the second term but once again poor kicking let them down. Finally they managed to goal which put them in front. They followed this by another behind and they led by 3 points. The Blues then scored for the first time in the quarter, two behinds were kicked. Then Horrie Clover marked and scored a goal. This was soon followed up by Jimmy Robertson who scored his second goal, this from another free kick. St.Kilda had dominated much of the term and should have been further in front. Carlton playing only five minutes of top football had some how managed to go into the break with a handy 11 point lead.
St.Kilda, once again were fast out of the blocks and this time goaled to reduce the margin to 5 points. The Blues attacked, but two attempts were rushed through. Harry Vallence marked and he kicked to Bill Koop who goaled and Blues' margin was now out to 12 points. The Saints replied with a snapped behind and then a soccered goal. Jimmy Roberston passed to Tom Mullens who bought up the Blues' seventh. Then Tom Mullens and Horrie Clover both missed easy chances to goal. Another soccered goal to the Saints reduced the margin to a goal. Then Horrie Clover took a great mark and sent the ball to Harry Vallence whose snap resulted in a clever goal. At the last break the lead was back out to 12 points with St.Kilda having dominated much of the play since quarter time.
Not to be out done St.Kilda went straight into attack and scored two quick goals and the difference was just a point. Horrie Clover on the run booted the Blues' ninth goal. The visitors went forward a few times but could not capitalize. Finally they a snapped goal and the margin was now three points. Charlie McSwain to Harry Vallence and then on to Harvey Dunn who goaled and lead was now 10 points. When Harry Vallence marked, the bell rang to end the game, and Harry calmly went back and slotted through Carlton eleventh goal for a some what lucky 17 point victory.
Carlton sat in 4th, just 4 points off top spot.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 124.3.
