Game Review
Carlton lost to Richmond in the season opener at the MCG. Quarter by quarter summaries are below:1st Quarter: Richmond dominate the quarter with sure hands in open play, whereas Carlton fumble the ball under pressure, Charlie Curnow being guilty of this with three fumbles. Richmond were set free to run the ball in open play, with too many loose men across the ground. A generally nervous start from our boys, it’s not nice to write, but Plowman had a definite look, allowing Riewoldt to mark. The whole quarter belongs to Richmond.
2nd Quarter: The second quarter started like the first. Richmond were too physical around the stoppages, again moving the ball too easily. Weitering added to Carlton’s fumble count. Was this a case of our boys against Richmond’s men? It was nice to see Carlton fight back. Fasoulo goaled after showing some physicality. Daisy Thomas goaled after winning the contested footy. And McGovern goaled after a questionable free kick, but we’ll take whatever we can get from the umpires. There was some wasteful possession from Cripps and Setterfield. Whilst Charlie Curnow dropped another mark. Gibbons had a great spoil and Fisher backed himself in. Overall a quarter where we matched Richmond in intensity and we showed some fighting spirit.
3rd Quarter: Richmond started with strong attack on the ball, before Carlton worked their way into the quarter. On half forward McKay marked strongly and confidently kicked the goal from the boundary, 45 metres out. And Charlie Curnow kicked a crumbing goal from the goal square. We wasted opportunities, missing three set shots from McKay, Setterfield and Paddy Dow. Play of the night came from a Sam Walsh pass to Murphy, new linking up with old. Newman kicked a great goal from the pocket and Plowman laid a great tackle. Charlie Curnow fumbled another mark. Newman laid a great tackle across half back, which slowed a Tiger’s forward thrust.
4th Quarter: With Richmond kicking away, this reporter put his pen down.
Carlton, a gutsy effort, no means disappointed with the effort. A solid performance where we came back after Richmond showing dominance and pulling away with a strong win. From Carlton’s perspective an admirable performance to start the season on. Go Blues.
