Blues welcome AFLW rookie pair
Carlton Football Club is delighted to welcome Maddison Gay and Kerryn Harrington as the two newest members to its AFLW team. The pair join the Blues as rookie-listed players having previously excelled in their respective sports – Gay as a netballer and Harrington a basketballer. After securing the talents of the athletes on the second day of the 2017 AFLW Trade Period, senior women’s coach Damien Keeping said he was thrilled to have the duo bound to the Blues. “We believe Maddison and Kerryn will help drive elite standards amongst our playing group,” Keeping said. “Maddison is an outside-mid with great balance, while Kerryn is an inside-mid who covers the ground exceptionally well. “They’re both still learning the game but we’re confident they’ll be really exciting prospects for the Club.” New rookie signings Madeline Gay (left) and Kerryn Harrington at Ikon Park today. As an elite netballer, Gay was selected in Melbourne University Lightning’s Division One side in 2017, after three years with Melbourne and one year with Ballarat Pride. The 20-year-old is currently studying to be a primary school teacher and joins the Blues from the St Kilda Sharks after pulling on footy boots for the first time this year. Meanwhile Harrington has spent the majority of her sporting career as a point guard for Bendigo Spirit in the Women’s National Basketball League. She also represented Australia at the 2009 and 2011 under-19 junior World Championships. Kerryn Harrington is a student who is currently studying for her Bachelor of Physiotherapy.

2021 - In Carlton's AFLW Best and Fairest count Harrington’s third-place finish saw the skipper return to the podium for the second time after she also finished third in the Club’s best-and-fairest count in 2019. The defender took her game to another level in 2021, achieving a career-high for disposals (132), while also leading the way at the Club for intercepts (65) and rebounds (32) in the Blues’ back half to be recognised with selection in the initial 40-person AFLW All-Australian squad. Senior Coach Daniel Harford praised the on-field achievements of all three Game Changers (Vescio, Stevens and Harrington) this season. “Both Nicola and Kerryn are true competitors and we know exactly what we are going to get from them each week. They put in the work at training and lead by example on game day, and as a result, they have both once again had very impressive seasons. “To have all three players of their experience finish in the top three at our club this year, is a testament to each of them as individuals and as admirable leaders of our group. They continue to drive the standards and strive to get the very best out of themselves and their teammates.”

Recruited from Bendigo Thunder (Vic)/Diamond Creek (VFLW).
