A talented big man and a football nomad, George Dougherty played at four clubs in his 173-game VFL career, and kicked 259 goals.

In an era of pedestrian ruckmen, Dougherty was also a potent forward. Said to be unusually nimble for his height and weight, he was a superb mark and a reliable kick for goal.

He began his senior career with Carlton in 1934, but could manage just 17 games in two and a half years. Part way through the 1936 season he was cleared to Geelong, where he blossomed into one of the outstanding players of the competition. In his second season with the Cats, he was a vital part of their 1937 Premiership team.

After six years at Geelong, George was on the move again – this time to Footscray for 25 games, before he was lured back to Corio Oval in 1944. He played another two seasons in the blue & white hoops, then left Geelong for good to play with South Melbourne. Ten more games and 26 goals for the Bloods in 1945 rounded off an outstanding career.

He games goals tally ended up being: Carlton 17 games ad 5 goals, Geelong 121 games and 188 goals, South Melbourne 10 games and 26 goals, Footscray 25 games and 30 goals. In total it was 173 games and 259 goals.

Dougherty was born and recruited from Beulah.
