At Carlton : 2014 - 2015
Guernsey No. 19
Height : 195 cm (6 ft. 4 in.)
Weight : 93 kg (14 stone, 6 lbs)
DOB : May 5, 1995

South Australian Cameron Giles came to Carlton as the Blues’ second round selection at number 39 in the 2013 AFL National Draft. A versatile tall defender from Woodville-West Torrens via Blyth-Snowtown, he had impressed at full-back for SA in the National Under-18 championships, and was near best on ground when the Eagles won the SANFL Under-18 Premiership.

With good pace and endurance for his size, Giles loved to set up attacks with bouncing runs from defence. “I used to play in the midfield when I was a kid,” he said in a pre-draft interview, “and I loved trying to get the ball and carry it and run.” Unfortunately for Cameron and for Carlton, his dream of playing AFL football never got off the ground, because of chronic stress fractures in both feet.

In 2014 Cameron played seven matches in the VFL with the Northern Blues before pain in his left foot (and precautionary scans on his right) led to surgery on his right navicular bone, and a frustrating eight months in a moon boot. In November, he was about to start on a rehabilitation program when a cyst developed on the repaired bone and the only option was another operation.

Eventually, Giles made it back on to the training track and played a comeback game with the Northern Blues Development Team in July, 2015. He was a popular figure around the club and a respected team-man, but the realities of football at elite level hit home when he was delisted in September. Giles would line up for Woodville-West Torrens for the 2016 season.
