AFL Overview of the Concept
AFLX is a new and exciting game created by the AFL to showcase some of the most thrilling elements of Australian Football to attract new fans. While there are some familiar aspects for fans, this new game will provide a very different experience. AFLX is played on a rectangular field with seven players on the field and three on the bench. AFLX is an express form of the game, with explosive action exhilarating fans of all ages. Get ready for 10-point super goals, last-touch out of bounds and non-stop action on and off the field. The inaugural 2018 AFLX tournament promises to be a great family experience with something for fans of all ages. AFLX promises to be a different experience, with game-day featuring flames, music DJs, in-game commentary, roving performers, kids and family zones and giveaways. The AFL wants fans to have the opportunity to help shape this new form of the game and influence what it looks like in the future. The 2018 AFLX tournament will see games played across three days, with the first at Hindmarsh Stadium on Thursday, February 15, followed by matches at Etihad Stadium on Friday, February 16 and Allianz Stadium on Saturday, February 17. Each event day will feature six teams at with two pools of three teams playing in a round-robin format. A Grand Final will be played at each event.
The Rules
- Playing field; a rectangle length 100-120m, width 60-70m, 40m arc
- 10 players; 7 on the field and 3 on the interchange bench
- Starting positions; 2 forwards, 2 defenders, 3 midfielders
- 2 x 10 minute halves with no time on
- Ruck ball-ups
- Last touch out of bounds is a free kick
- 25m penalties
- Kick backwards is play on unless in the forward 40
- Zooper goal is worth 10 points (kicked outside of 40m arc)
- 20 second shot clock
- Rushed behind results in a set shot from 40m
- Kick in from any score
The AFLX Competition was broken down into three tournaments that was played in Adelaide 15/2/18, Melbourne 16/2/18 and Sydney 17/2/18. There was a tournament winner for each of the three competitions.

Games Review
While the Blues lost both of their games and were the first team knocked out, they would have been pleased with the signs shown by emerging midfielder Zac Fisher. The 19-year-old's speed through the centre of the ground and penetrating kick look like being assets for the Blues in 2018. No.3 draft pick Paddy Dow also showed good signs, particularly with his smarts in cutting off opposition kicks. He was consistent across both matches, while fellow first-round draftee Lochie O'Brien was kept to one match but looked comfortable. Jarrod Pickett provided the highlights with his sharpness around goal and creativity against the Kangaroos, with new Blue Matt Kennedy winning 18 possessions across the two shortened games.
