HOME GROUNDS: Royal Park, East Melbourne, Richmond Paddock, M. C. G.

Carlton had been unceremoniously removed from their Madeline Street home ground by the University authorities because the Club had the temerity to charge for admission. The Blues were only trying to recoupe their large 300 pound debt it had spent on improving the ground. Once the debt was paid off any extra monies were to be donated to charity. The Irish game of Hurling was subsequently played on the ground and ironically, and an admission charge was allowed! The VFA Project web site says Hotham were then allowed to use the ground on four occasions in August and September 1878 to play football against Albert Park (twice), West Melbourne, and Barwon.

This eviction led to Carlton's nomadic existence of almost 20 years of being without a ground to call their own. This situation lasted until Round 7, 1897.
