Game Review

Carlton met the Eagles for the first time since their Pre-Season Wizard Cup triumph. Many of the scribes would write that this was the game of two halves; I think it better to think of this as a game of contrasts - the super skilled midfield of the Eagles, compared to our midfield grouping of Stevens, Koutoufides and Camporeale.

Indeed it was a game of two halves. In the first quarter, the Blues surprised everyone by bursting out of the blocks and utilising an open forward line to great effect. Some straight kicking helped as well, plus the surprising output of Brett Johnson who would set up 3 goals. Although they tightened up in the second, the Blues would turn the corner still 10 points up.

And in the second half the Eagles midfield of Cousins and Judd and Kerr and Fletcher would just rip it away from us, delivering to forwards who couldn't touch it in the first quarter, and now suddenly ominous, or slotting goals themselves.

But the Eagles of 2005 were a sensational team to watch, and the Blues, well, we came last for good reason. To give up 15 goals and kick only one in a half tells the story of the difference in lists between 1st (Eagles finished up second after coming off the boil in the last month of the season) and 16th. In particular, the Eagles midfield would double the possessions of Carlton's brigade, with Heath Scotland leading our possession count with 17. In fact, Andrew Walker playing as a tagger on future Blue Judd, would almost pip him and never give up all day. Despite Walker's efforts, Judd still managed the 2 votes.

Other than Walker, the only other highlight was the performance of maligned full back Luke Livingston who would keep Quentin Lynch goalless and top our B&F votes for the game. It would seem as though others had given up, with Club leaders Camporeale (12 stats), Koutoufides (11 stats) and Stevens (16 stats) blown away.
