Game Review

A bright, sunny day at the Lake Oval provided Carlton (perhaps still basking in the joy of defeating Collingwood) with a surprisingly stern test against the lowly Swans. South led by 5 points at half-time, thanks mainly to the efforts of Tony Morwood, who ended up kicking seven goals for the match in a Best on Ground performance.

There was still five points in it at the last break, but the advantage by then was with the Blues. In a freewheeling last term, Carlton kicked 6.4 to the Swans 6.3 and got home by a goal.

Alex Jesaulenko may have taken his last ever 'Jezza' for Carlton that day, in the goal square. (He certainly took a speccy for St. Kilda in his first match as captain-coach with them the following year).

In other matches, Fitzroy thrashed Geelong at the Junction Oval, and moved up to third on the ladder behind Carlton and North Melbourne.

After 11 rounds Carlton held top spot with only one loss, but in this latest round struck strong resistance from South Melbourne, which was near the bottom. Tony Morwood gave the Carlton defence many headaches and finished with seven goals. One of South's best was rover Bernie Evans, who was later to join Carlton. - Football Record.
