Game Review

The old bell on the wall of the press box to ring the start and end of each quarter has now, for the first time, been replaced with an electric siren, see below.
Carlton fielded one of their strongest teams, missing only Ken Baxter who will soon to return from injury and Ray Garby serving out his last week of suspension.
North were hit with injuries including to their champion Les Foote.
In front of the largest crowd for this round, the Blues steadied after North held an early lead of four goals to one. Jack Howell scored the Blues' early goal. This was soon followed by a goal to Fred Stafford. Alan Streeter and Ken Hands both goaled in time on, leaving Carlton within striking distance at the end of the first quarter. Captain Ern Henfry was a steadying influence when North were dominant.
Goals to Jack Conley and Ken Hands gave the Blues the lead for the first time in the game. Ern Henfry was well on top in the centre providing much of the forward drive. When Jack Howell kicked his team's seventh goal the Blues led by 16 points at half time.
Both teams attacked early in the third term. Hands added a behind and North goaled from a nice angled kicked. Play was scrambled as both teams tried to negate each other in the air. Jack Howell who was now at full forward was the recipient of some close attention and received two free kicks resulting in goals.The Northerners continued the attack but the defence of Ritchie Green, Ollie Grieve and Arthur Hodgson proved too strong and repeatedly turned the tide. There was some undisciplined play when two North players contested a mark with Jack Howell which left Jack Conley free to crumb and goal with the Blues now holding a 35 point lead at the last break.
(Also Ken Hands and Jack Howell added an additional two goals during the third term)
On resumption of play ruckman Jim Baird dashed forward to goal and extend the lead. North replied with a couple of goals but the Blues were content to maintain a 30 point buffer. When North added their fourth for the term, Carlton stormed out of the centre resulting with Ken Hands snapping a nice goal and his fourth for the match.

This win puts Carlton clear at the head of the League ladder. The Blues are 4 points and 11.4% ahead of second placed Richmond.

They Should Call It "Footbrawl"

A reporter from the Northern Times (Carnarvon W.A.) wrote about his impression of the crowd at this match and his observation of Carlton's No.1 ticket holder Robert Gordon Menzies.

Carlton Test Time Horn

Herald Monday June 06 (p14);
"Field Umpire Jamieson and the players heard the horn which replaced the bell at the Carlton Football Ground on Saturday, but the Carlton time keeper (Mr. C. W. Quilhampton) believes that although effective the apparatus would be improved if it was more shrill.
He said the horn which was similar to the type used on battleships was not sufficiently shrill or imperative. He believed it was too harmonious and toned in with the yelling of the crowd. The horn was operated by pressing down hard on a button on the timekeepers bench."
