Game Review

Saturday's Sporting Globe said it was a record crowd (21,500) and record takings of 585 pounds.

Prior to this round, the Blues could not be dislodged from top spot and the Cats couldn't make the four. This suggested that the match was likely to be a ho-hum affair, but that is not how it turned out.

Carlton led comfortably through the first three quarters, generally by 3 to 4 goals, and at the last change, the Blues still maintained a 24-point advantage. Then Geelong unleashed a final quarter onslaught, spearheaded by their dynamic full-forward Lindsay White. The visitors were clinging to a bare 4-point lead as the clock ticked into time-on, and White took a spectacular mark wide out on the half-forward flank on the grandstand side of the ground. By then, he had booted nine goals for the day, and was threatening to snatch victory for the home side.

White looked for a lead, but when none were forthcoming, decided to take what seemed to be a near-impossible shot for goal. He launched a mighty drop-kick, and to the astonishment of everyone watching, it split the posts easily. White's booming kick was later measured at more than sixty metres, and Geelong's old-timers will tell you that it remains the greatest goal ever kicked at the ground.

Kicking 7.1 to the Blues' 2.5 in that last term, the Cats won by 2 points. But Carlton still shaped up for the finals on top of the ladder, and a percentage of 134.
Essendon in 2 weeks was now our focus.
