Game Review

The Blues produced a stunning turnaround from the previous week to overcome the Bloods who were sitting comfortably in 1st position, with 1 round remaining the Blues were seriously pushing the top 4 and next week's match against Richmond would be crucial to their finals' chances.

"The second quarter was no improvement on the first, with South Melbourne having a nine points' lead at the interval. All the incidents and the excitement were in the second half. The third term was the fastest and nastiest of the match, a great deal of temper being shown, and just at the finish of it blows were exchanged between two rival ruck men. For a moment, as the other players rushed to the spot, matters looked decidedly unpleasant. The ringing of the bell saved the situation.
At the last change South Melbourne were still nine points ahead, a handy lead on such a disagreeable day. The players had time to cool down at the three quarter spell, and thence on the game was too exciting to think about anything else than winning it.
Carlton tried their old method of shock tactics in a desperate situation, and it just pulled them through. From a mark close in Stewart kicked their seventh goal, and there was wild excitement. South Melbourne, however, answered the call gallantly, frequently bringing the ball forward, and while their scouts were still playing cleverly, the cross wind was nullifying their efforts. For a long time the game was in suspense, with neither side able to score, when, with a final, desperate, dying rally Carlton broke through, and Fisher playing to Haughton close in, the winning goal was scored. Shortly afterwards the bell rang, Carlton winning by four points. The excitement at the finish was intense. As before stated, the wonderful finish saved the match from the commonplace." (Trove: Australasian September 13 p27)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 126.8.
