David B. McKay played U/19's foortball for Carlton from 1974 to 1977, and reserve grade football from 1974 to 1978. Not to be mistaken for his older cousin being Carlton Champion David McKay, also there was a David G. McKay who played around 1970 with the Blues.
Four-time Carlton Premiership player David McKay – that’s David Robert James “Swan” McKay – believed that DB McKay later pursued an on-field career with Glenelg. “We actually used to call him ‘DB’, although I have no idea what the ‘B’ stands for,” McKay said. “DB was a flanker, quite a handsome boy as opposed to the rest of the rabble. DB’s father Mal was the butcher at Strathmore who bought the business from Phil Pinnell’s father George - and Phil worked there for Mal during school holidays. DB ended up working as a car salesman in South Australia, but I think he’s back in Melbourne now.”
His first Under 19 game was May 1973 – at that stage he was aged 13 years, eleven months. Apparently Allan Mangels was a benchwarmer in a game at age 11 or 12, but never got a run. DB also played district cricket for Essendon at 15 and was a Victorian junior sprinter and javelin champ.
DB represented the Victorian Schoolboys football teams of 1973 and ’74. He was named captain of the ’74 team and was promptly adjudged All-Australian Captain. In that second year for the Schoolboys he crossed paths with fellow Victorians Wayne Harmes, Ken Sheldon and Wayne Farquhar, as well as Tasmania’s Michael Young and Western Australia’s Ken Judge.
At Carlton, DB wore guernsey No.54 in 1974 then No.46 until he finished up. In the latter half of the ’77 season he crossed Bass Strait and played centre half-forward for Penguin (presumably on permit) and was part of the team that upset hot favourite Cooee in the Grand Final. This was Penguin’s first senior NTFL Premiership in 45 years.
Ian Stewart delisted him as a Carlton senior-listed player in 1978 even though DB advised Stewie that he was still eligible to play in the Unders. Regardless, DB was moved on. He relocated to West Torrens, met and married the daughter of the three-time Magarey Medallist Lindsay Head, pursued a career as a motor vehicle dealer and never returned. He also completed a 20-year career in the city of Churches as a football commentator.
David B. McKay was recruited from Oak Park.
He didn't play a senior game for Carlton.
