Note:

Before the advent of coaches, Jack Worrall being the first in the VFL, the captain made the decision to move players during the game. He was also responsible on training nights, although probably past players and/or officials would have been on hand to help out. However, way back in 1875 it was mentioned in "The Footballer" that former Carlton captain George D. Kennedy had now retired and was an enthusiastic coach of the second division.
