Game Review

With this win against 4th placed Geelong, Carlton were able to leapfrog both the Cats and Fitzroy and move into 3rd place. Carlton were only 8 points behind ladder leading Collingwood, with 6 rounds to go.

Carlton kicked 4 goals to 1 in the second half of this game to win it.

"The wind at Geelong was first allied with the local forces, enabling them to prevail against Carlton. There was no vast advantage in the breeze, however, its direction being partly on the cross. Two goals were netted by the home players in this term, and these represented the only important scores during the first half. Plenty of shots were won by the Blues, but the wind, which helped maked the shots, also operated to upset the actual kick for goal. By half-time Geelong led by 16 points to 8, although Carlton had crossed the goal line eight times as against six recorded for the local side.
After resting, the visitors bore down heavily on the local citadel, and abandoning all sembalance of wasteful kicking three times put the ball through from as many shots. Geelong had opportunities in fair number, but used only one to proper purpose; hence at third bell the local lead had dwindled to two points. In the race for home, Geelong had some advantage for a time. Then the Carltonians moved out and provided a chance which earned a single. The disappionted marksman, Fisher, soon got another opportunity, and this time both flags responded to his kick. Cheering and counter-cheering then kept the ground in a ferment of excitement. Geelong players strove with all their recently developed skill and determination, but the Blues were equally clever and persistent. In the midst of the battle royal the bell rang in a Carlton victory by 5 points. The goal crossings were level at 14 each.
Leading Carlton men were O'Brien, McDonald, McGregor, Dunn, Valentine, and Daykin."
