The Blues attacked at the start of the second term and Gardiner just missed kicking a goal. Then for much of the quarter the game developed into a high marking contest with up to a dozen players at a time contesting for marks. Gordon Green and George Challis came into the play and got the ball to Alf Baud who also missed a chance. A long kick by Jim Marchbank found Alex Barningham on the goal line who marked and kicked the Blues' third. Gotz, Challis and Gardiner combined and Martin Gotz received a free kick. His long kick found Richard Moran who scored the fourth goal. The Blues had held Fitzroy to a solitary point for the quarter and at half time had reduced the deficit to 4 points.
Fitzroy now with the wind put on 3 goals before Moran got the ball to Barningham who scored the fifth goal for the Blues. The 'Roys replied, then Moran to Gibbins and then to Harry Haughton who kicked the sixth. When the bell rang, the Blues were 20 points down, but had the wind in the final term. Two behinds to Fitzroy, then Vin Gardiner hit the post, then again Moran kicked to Haughton who scored another goal to reduce the margin to 15 points. Fitzroy again replied, then Moran scored the Blues' eighth goal. This last effort seemed to take the wind out of Carlton, and Fitzroy then took command, running out easy winners scoring another 4 goals to Carlton's one by Gardiner.
Fitzroy was in top spot and wasn't about to give it up in this battle against third-placed Carlton. The Maroons won by 35 points, dropping Carlton down to fourth behind Fitzroy, South Melbourne and Collingwood. St Kilda was fifth, six points behind the Blues.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 109.8.
